Distinguish short vowels from madd (lengthened) sounds and lin (soft) sounds.

How to practise

Compare each short sound with its lengthened form. Hold a normal madd for two counts unless the teacher marks a different rule.

Pronunciation guide

Alif after fatha gives aa, yaa sakin after kasra gives ii, and waaw sakin after damma gives uu. Lin uses a softer ay or aw sound after fatha.
