سورة 26

بِسۡمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

26:1

طسٓمٓ

Tâ-Sîn-Mîm.

26:2

تِلۡكَ ءَايَـٰتُ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ ٱلۡمُبِينِ

These are the Verses of the manifest Book [(this Qur’ân), which was promised by Allâh in the Taurât (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel), makes things clear].

26:3

لَعَلَّكَ بَـٰخِعٌۭ نَّفۡسَكَ أَلَّا يَكُونُوا۟ مُؤۡمِنِينَ

It may be that you (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) are going to kill yourself with grief, that they do not become believers [in your Risalah (Messengership) i.e. in your Message of Islâmic Monotheism].[1]

26:4

إِن نَّشَأۡ نُنَزِّلۡ عَلَيۡهِم مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ ءَايَةًۭ فَظَلَّتۡ أَعۡنَـٰقُهُمۡ لَهَا خَـٰضِعِينَ

If We will, We could send down to them from the heaven a sign, to which they would bend their necks in humility.

26:5

وَمَا يَأۡتِيهِم مِّن ذِكۡرٍۢ مِّنَ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ مُحۡدَثٍ إِلَّا كَانُوا۟ عَنۡهُ مُعۡرِضِينَ

And never comes there unto them a Reminder as a recent revelation from the Most Gracious (Allâh), but they turn away therefrom.

26:6

فَقَدۡ كَذَّبُوا۟ فَسَيَأۡتِيهِمۡ أَنۢبَـٰٓؤُا۟ مَا كَانُوا۟ بِهِۦ يَسۡتَهۡزِءُونَ

So they have indeed denied (the truth - this Qur’ân), then the news of what they mocked at will come to them.

26:7

أَوَلَمۡ يَرَوۡا۟ إِلَى ٱلۡأَرۡضِ كَمۡ أَنۢبَتۡنَا فِيهَا مِن كُلِّ زَوۡجٍۢ كَرِيمٍ

Do they not observe the earth - how much of every good kind We cause to grow therein?

26:8

إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَـَٔايَةًۭ ۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكۡثَرُهُم مُّؤۡمِنِينَ

Verily, in this is an Ayâh (proof or sign), yet most of them (polytheists, pagans who do not believe in Resurrection) are not believers.

26:9

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلۡعَزِيزُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ

And verily your Lord, He is truly the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful.

26:10

وَإِذۡ نَادَىٰ رَبُّكَ مُوسَىٰٓ أَنِ ٱئۡتِ ٱلۡقَوۡمَ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ

And (remember) when your Lord called Mûsâ (Moses) (saying): "Go to the people who are Zâlimûn (polytheists and wrong-doers) -

26:11

قَوۡمَ فِرۡعَوۡنَ ۚ أَلَا يَتَّقُونَ

"The people of Fir‘aun (Pharaoh): Will they not fear Allâh and become righteous?"

26:12

قَالَ رَبِّ إِنِّىٓ أَخَافُ أَن يُكَذِّبُونِ

He said: "My Lord! Verily, I fear that they will belie me,

26:13

وَيَضِيقُ صَدۡرِى وَلَا يَنطَلِقُ لِسَانِى فَأَرۡسِلۡ إِلَىٰ هَـٰرُونَ

"And my breast straitens, and my tongue expresses not well. So send for Hârûn (Aaron) (to come along with me).

26:14

وَلَهُمۡ عَلَىَّ ذَنۢبٌۭ فَأَخَافُ أَن يَقۡتُلُونِ

"And they have a charge of crime against me, and I fear they will kill me."

26:15

قَالَ كَلَّا ۖ فَٱذۡهَبَا بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَآ ۖ إِنَّا مَعَكُم مُّسۡتَمِعُونَ

(Allâh) said: "Nay! Go you both with Our Signs. Verily We shall be with you, listening.

26:16

فَأۡتِيَا فِرۡعَوۡنَ فَقُولَآ إِنَّا رَسُولُ رَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِينَ

"And go both of you to Fir‘aun (Pharaoh), and say: ‘We are the Messengers of the Lord of the ‘Âlamîn (mankind, jinn and all that exists),

26:17

أَنۡ أَرۡسِلۡ مَعَنَا بَنِىٓ إِسۡرَٰٓءِيلَ

"So allow the Children of Israel to go with us.’ "

26:18

قَالَ أَلَمۡ نُرَبِّكَ فِينَا وَلِيدًۭا وَلَبِثۡتَ فِينَا مِنۡ عُمُرِكَ سِنِينَ

[Fir‘aun (Pharaoh)] said [to Mûsâ (Moses)]: "Did we not bring you up among us as a child? And you did dwell many years of your life with us.

26:19

وَفَعَلۡتَ فَعۡلَتَكَ ٱلَّتِى فَعَلۡتَ وَأَنتَ مِنَ ٱلۡكَـٰفِرِينَ

"And you did your deed, which you did (i.e. the crime of killing a man) while you were one of the ingrates."

26:20

قَالَ فَعَلۡتُهَآ إِذًۭا وَأَنَا۠ مِنَ ٱلضَّآلِّينَ

Mûsâ (Moses) said: "I did it then, when I was ignorant (as regards my Lord and His Message).

26:21

فَفَرَرۡتُ مِنكُمۡ لَمَّا خِفۡتُكُمۡ فَوَهَبَ لِى رَبِّى حُكۡمًۭا وَجَعَلَنِى مِنَ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِينَ

"So I fled from you when I feared you. But my Lord has granted me Hukm (i.e. religious knowledge, right judgement of the affairs and Prophethood), and made me one of the Messengers.

26:22

وَتِلۡكَ نِعۡمَةٌۭ تَمُنُّهَا عَلَىَّ أَنۡ عَبَّدتَّ بَنِىٓ إِسۡرَٰٓءِيلَ

"And this is the past favour with which you reproach me: that you have enslaved the Children of Israel."

26:23

قَالَ فِرۡعَوۡنُ وَمَا رَبُّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِينَ

Fir‘aun (Pharaoh) said: "And what is the Lord of the ‘Âlamîn (mankind, jinn and all that exists)?"

26:24

قَالَ رَبُّ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَمَا بَيۡنَهُمَآ ۖ إِن كُنتُم مُّوقِنِينَ

[Mûsâ (Moses)] said: "The Lord of the heavens and the earth, and all that is between them, if you seek to be convinced with certainty."

26:25

قَالَ لِمَنۡ حَوۡلَهُۥٓ أَلَا تَسۡتَمِعُونَ

[Fir‘aun (Pharaoh)] said to those around: "Do you not hear (what he says)?"

26:26

قَالَ رَبُّكُمۡ وَرَبُّ ءَابَآئِكُمُ ٱلۡأَوَّلِينَ

[Mûsâ (Moses)] said: "Your Lord and the Lord of your ancient fathers!"

26:27

قَالَ إِنَّ رَسُولَكُمُ ٱلَّذِىٓ أُرۡسِلَ إِلَيۡكُمۡ لَمَجۡنُونٌۭ

[Fir‘aun (Pharaoh)] said: "Verily, your Messenger who has been sent to you is a madman!"

26:28

قَالَ رَبُّ ٱلۡمَشۡرِقِ وَٱلۡمَغۡرِبِ وَمَا بَيۡنَهُمَآ ۖ إِن كُنتُمۡ تَعۡقِلُونَ

[Mûsâ (Moses)] said: "Lord of the east and the west, and all that is between them, if you did but understand!"

26:29

قَالَ لَئِنِ ٱتَّخَذۡتَ إِلَـٰهًا غَيۡرِى لَأَجۡعَلَنَّكَ مِنَ ٱلۡمَسۡجُونِينَ

[Fir‘aun (Pharaoh)] said: "If you choose an ilâh (god) other than me, I will certainly put you among the prisoners."

26:30

قَالَ أَوَلَوۡ جِئۡتُكَ بِشَىۡءٍۢ مُّبِينٍۢ

[Mûsâ (Moses)] said: "Even if I bring you something manifest (and convincing)?"

26:31

قَالَ فَأۡتِ بِهِۦٓ إِن كُنتَ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰدِقِينَ

[Fir‘aun (Pharaoh)] said: "Bring it forth then, if you are of the truthful!"

26:32

فَأَلۡقَىٰ عَصَاهُ فَإِذَا هِىَ ثُعۡبَانٌۭ مُّبِينٌۭ

So [Mûsâ (Moses)] threw his stick, and behold, it was a serpent, manifest.

26:33

وَنَزَعَ يَدَهُۥ فَإِذَا هِىَ بَيۡضَآءُ لِلنَّـٰظِرِينَ

And he drew out his hand, and behold, it was white to all beholders!

26:34

قَالَ لِلۡمَلَإِ حَوۡلَهُۥٓ إِنَّ هَـٰذَا لَسَـٰحِرٌ عَلِيمٌۭ

[Fir‘aun (Pharaoh)] said to the chiefs around him: "Verily! This is indeed a well-versed sorcerer.

26:35

يُرِيدُ أَن يُخۡرِجَكُم مِّنۡ أَرۡضِكُم بِسِحۡرِهِۦ فَمَاذَا تَأۡمُرُونَ

"He wants to drive you out of your land by his sorcery: what is it then that you command?"

26:36

قَالُوٓا۟ أَرۡجِهۡ وَأَخَاهُ وَٱبۡعَثۡ فِى ٱلۡمَدَآئِنِ حَـٰشِرِينَ

They said: "Put him off and his brother (for a while), and send callers to the cities;

26:37

يَأۡتُوكَ بِكُلِّ سَحَّارٍ عَلِيمٍۢ

"To bring up to you every well-versed sorcerer."

26:38

فَجُمِعَ ٱلسَّحَرَةُ لِمِيقَـٰتِ يَوۡمٍۢ مَّعۡلُومٍۢ

So the sorcerers were assembled at a fixed time on a day appointed.

26:39

وَقِيلَ لِلنَّاسِ هَلۡ أَنتُم مُّجۡتَمِعُونَ

And it was said to the people: "Are you (too) going to assemble?

26:40

لَعَلَّنَا نَتَّبِعُ ٱلسَّحَرَةَ إِن كَانُوا۟ هُمُ ٱلۡغَـٰلِبِينَ

"That we may follow the sorcerers [who were on Fir‘aun’s (Pharaoh) religion of disbelief] if they are the winners."

26:41

فَلَمَّا جَآءَ ٱلسَّحَرَةُ قَالُوا۟ لِفِرۡعَوۡنَ أَئِنَّ لَنَا لَأَجۡرًا إِن كُنَّا نَحۡنُ ٱلۡغَـٰلِبِينَ

So when the sorcerers arrived, they said to Fir‘aun (Pharaoh): "Will there surely be a reward for us if we are the winners?"

26:42

قَالَ نَعَمۡ وَإِنَّكُمۡ إِذًۭا لَّمِنَ ٱلۡمُقَرَّبِينَ

He said: "Yes, and you shall then verily be of those brought near (to myself)."

26:43

قَالَ لَهُم مُّوسَىٰٓ أَلۡقُوا۟ مَآ أَنتُم مُّلۡقُونَ

Mûsâ (Moses) said to them: "Throw what you are going to throw!"

26:44

فَأَلۡقَوۡا۟ حِبَالَهُمۡ وَعِصِيَّهُمۡ وَقَالُوا۟ بِعِزَّةِ فِرۡعَوۡنَ إِنَّا لَنَحۡنُ ٱلۡغَـٰلِبُونَ

So they threw their ropes and their sticks, and said: "By the might of Fir‘aun (Pharaoh), it is we who will certainly win!"

26:45

فَأَلۡقَىٰ مُوسَىٰ عَصَاهُ فَإِذَا هِىَ تَلۡقَفُ مَا يَأۡفِكُونَ

Then Mûsâ (Moses) threw his stick, and behold, it swallowed up all that they falsely showed!

26:46

فَأُلۡقِىَ ٱلسَّحَرَةُ سَـٰجِدِينَ

And the sorcerers fell down prostrate.

26:47

قَالُوٓا۟ ءَامَنَّا بِرَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِينَ

Saying: "We believe in the Lord of the ‘Âlamîn (mankind, jinn and all that exists).

26:48

رَبِّ مُوسَىٰ وَهَـٰرُونَ

"The Lord of Mûsâ (Moses) and Hârûn (Aaron)."

26:49

قَالَ ءَامَنتُمۡ لَهُۥ قَبۡلَ أَنۡ ءَاذَنَ لَكُمۡ ۖ إِنَّهُۥ لَكَبِيرُكُمُ ٱلَّذِى عَلَّمَكُمُ ٱلسِّحۡرَ فَلَسَوۡفَ تَعۡلَمُونَ ۚ لَأُقَطِّعَنَّ أَيۡدِيَكُمۡ وَأَرۡجُلَكُم مِّنۡ خِلَـٰفٍۢ وَلَأُصَلِّبَنَّكُمۡ أَجۡمَعِينَ

[Fir‘aun (Pharaoh)] said: "You have believed in him before I give you leave. Surely, he indeed is your chief, who has taught you magic! So verily, you shall come to know. Verily, I will cut off your hands and your feet on opposite sides, and I will crucify you all."

26:50

قَالُوا۟ لَا ضَيۡرَ ۖ إِنَّآ إِلَىٰ رَبِّنَا مُنقَلِبُونَ

They said: "No harm! Surely, to our Lord (Allâh) we are to return.

26:51

إِنَّا نَطۡمَعُ أَن يَغۡفِرَ لَنَا رَبُّنَا خَطَـٰيَـٰنَآ أَن كُنَّآ أَوَّلَ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ

"Verily we really hope that our Lord will forgive us our sins, as we are the first of the believers [in Mûsâ (Moses) and in the Monotheism which he has brought from Allâh]."

26:52

۞ وَأَوۡحَيۡنَآ إِلَىٰ مُوسَىٰٓ أَنۡ أَسۡرِ بِعِبَادِىٓ إِنَّكُم مُّتَّبَعُونَ

And We revealed to Mûsâ (Moses), saying: "Depart by night with My slaves, verily you will be pursued."

26:53

فَأَرۡسَلَ فِرۡعَوۡنُ فِى ٱلۡمَدَآئِنِ حَـٰشِرِينَ

Then Fir‘aun (Pharaoh) sent callers to (all) the cities.

26:54

إِنَّ هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ لَشِرۡذِمَةٌۭ قَلِيلُونَ

(Saying): "Verily these indeed are but a small band.

26:55

وَإِنَّهُمۡ لَنَا لَغَآئِظُونَ

"And verily, they have done what has enraged us.

26:56

وَإِنَّا لَجَمِيعٌ حَـٰذِرُونَ

"But we are a host all assembled, amply fore-warned."

26:57

فَأَخۡرَجۡنَـٰهُم مِّن جَنَّـٰتٍۢ وَعُيُونٍۢ

So, We expelled them from gardens and springs,

26:58

وَكُنُوزٍۢ وَمَقَامٍۢ كَرِيمٍۢ

Treasures, and every kind of honourable place.

26:59

كَذَٰلِكَ وَأَوۡرَثۡنَـٰهَا بَنِىٓ إِسۡرَٰٓءِيلَ

Thus [We turned them (Pharaoh’s people) out] and We caused the Children of Israel to inherit them.

26:60

فَأَتۡبَعُوهُم مُّشۡرِقِينَ

So they pursued them at sunrise.

26:61

فَلَمَّا تَرَٰٓءَا ٱلۡجَمۡعَانِ قَالَ أَصۡحَـٰبُ مُوسَىٰٓ إِنَّا لَمُدۡرَكُونَ

And when the two hosts saw each other, the companions of Mûsâ (Moses) said: "We are sure to be overtaken."

26:62

قَالَ كَلَّآ ۖ إِنَّ مَعِىَ رَبِّى سَيَهۡدِينِ

[Mûsâ (Moses)] said: "Nay, verily with me is my Lord. He will guide me."

26:63

فَأَوۡحَيۡنَآ إِلَىٰ مُوسَىٰٓ أَنِ ٱضۡرِب بِّعَصَاكَ ٱلۡبَحۡرَ ۖ فَٱنفَلَقَ فَكَانَ كُلُّ فِرۡقٍۢ كَٱلطَّوۡدِ ٱلۡعَظِيمِ

Then We revealed to Mûsâ (Moses) (saying): "Strike the sea with your stick." And it parted, and each separate part (of that sea water) became like huge mountain.

26:64

وَأَزۡلَفۡنَا ثَمَّ ٱلۡـَٔاخَرِينَ

Then We brought near the others [Fir‘aun’s (Pharaoh) party] to that place.

26:65

وَأَنجَيۡنَا مُوسَىٰ وَمَن مَّعَهُۥٓ أَجۡمَعِينَ

And We saved Mûsâ (Moses) and all those with him.

26:66

ثُمَّ أَغۡرَقۡنَا ٱلۡـَٔاخَرِينَ

Then We drowned the others.

26:67

إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَـَٔايَةًۭ ۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكۡثَرُهُم مُّؤۡمِنِينَ

Verily in this is indeed a sign (or a proof), yet most of them are not believers.

26:68

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلۡعَزِيزُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ

And verily your Lord, He is truly the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful.

26:69

وَٱتۡلُ عَلَيۡهِمۡ نَبَأَ إِبۡرَٰهِيمَ

And recite to them the story of Ibrâhîm (Abraham).

26:70

إِذۡ قَالَ لِأَبِيهِ وَقَوۡمِهِۦ مَا تَعۡبُدُونَ

When he said to his father and his people: "What do you worship?"

26:71

قَالُوا۟ نَعۡبُدُ أَصۡنَامًۭا فَنَظَلُّ لَهَا عَـٰكِفِينَ

They said: "We worship idols, and to them we are ever devoted."

26:72

قَالَ هَلۡ يَسۡمَعُونَكُمۡ إِذۡ تَدۡعُونَ

He said: "Do they hear you, when you call on (them)?

26:73

أَوۡ يَنفَعُونَكُمۡ أَوۡ يَضُرُّونَ

"Or do they benefit you or do they harm (you)?"

26:74

قَالُوا۟ بَلۡ وَجَدۡنَآ ءَابَآءَنَا كَذَٰلِكَ يَفۡعَلُونَ

They said: "(Nay) but we found our fathers doing so."

26:75

قَالَ أَفَرَءَيۡتُم مَّا كُنتُمۡ تَعۡبُدُونَ

He said: "Do you observe that which you have been worshipping -

26:76

أَنتُمۡ وَءَابَآؤُكُمُ ٱلۡأَقۡدَمُونَ

"You and your ancient fathers?

26:77

فَإِنَّهُمۡ عَدُوٌّۭ لِّىٓ إِلَّا رَبَّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِينَ

"Verily they are enemies to me, save the Lord of the ‘Âlamîn (mankind, jinn and all that exists),

26:78

ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَنِى فَهُوَ يَهۡدِينِ

"Who has created me, and it is He Who guides me.

26:79

وَٱلَّذِى هُوَ يُطۡعِمُنِى وَيَسۡقِينِ

"And it is He Who feeds me and gives me to drink.

26:80

وَإِذَا مَرِضۡتُ فَهُوَ يَشۡفِينِ

"And when I am ill, it is He who cures me.

26:81

وَٱلَّذِى يُمِيتُنِى ثُمَّ يُحۡيِينِ

"And Who will cause me to die, and then will bring me to life (again).

26:82

وَٱلَّذِىٓ أَطۡمَعُ أَن يَغۡفِرَ لِى خَطِيٓـَٔتِى يَوۡمَ ٱلدِّينِ

"And Who, I hope, will forgive me my faults on the Day of Recompense, (the Day of Resurrection).

26:83

رَبِّ هَبۡ لِى حُكۡمًۭا وَأَلۡحِقۡنِى بِٱلصَّـٰلِحِينَ

My Lord! Bestow Hukm (religious knowledge, right judgement of the affairs and Prophethood) on me, and join me with the righteous.

26:84

وَٱجۡعَل لِّى لِسَانَ صِدۡقٍۢ فِى ٱلۡـَٔاخِرِينَ

And grant me an honourable mention in later generations.

26:85

وَٱجۡعَلۡنِى مِن وَرَثَةِ جَنَّةِ ٱلنَّعِيمِ

And make me one of the inheritors of the Paradise of Delight.

26:86

وَٱغۡفِرۡ لِأَبِىٓ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ مِنَ ٱلضَّآلِّينَ

And forgive my father, verily he is of the erring.

26:87

وَلَا تُخۡزِنِى يَوۡمَ يُبۡعَثُونَ

And disgrace me not on the Day when (all the creatures) will be resurrected.

26:88

يَوۡمَ لَا يَنفَعُ مَالٌۭ وَلَا بَنُونَ

The Day whereon neither wealth nor sons will avail,

26:89

إِلَّا مَنۡ أَتَى ٱللَّهَ بِقَلۡبٍۢ سَلِيمٍۢ

Except him who brings to Allâh a clean heart [clean from Shirk (polytheism) and Nifâq (hypocrisy)]."

26:90

وَأُزۡلِفَتِ ٱلۡجَنَّةُ لِلۡمُتَّقِينَ

And Paradise will be brought near to the Muttaqûn (the pious - See V.2:2).

26:91

وَبُرِّزَتِ ٱلۡجَحِيمُ لِلۡغَاوِينَ

And the (Hell) Fire will be placed in full view of the erring.

26:92

وَقِيلَ لَهُمۡ أَيۡنَ مَا كُنتُمۡ تَعۡبُدُونَ

And it will be said to them: "Where are those (the false gods whom you used to set up as rivals with Allâh) that you used to worship.

26:93

مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ هَلۡ يَنصُرُونَكُمۡ أَوۡ يَنتَصِرُونَ

"Instead of Allâh? Can they help you or (even) help themselves?"

26:94

فَكُبۡكِبُوا۟ فِيهَا هُمۡ وَٱلۡغَاوُۥنَ

Then they will be thrown on their faces into the (Fire), they and the Ghâwûn (devils, and those who were in error).

26:95

وَجُنُودُ إِبۡلِيسَ أَجۡمَعُونَ

And the whole hosts of Iblîs (Satan) together.

26:96

قَالُوا۟ وَهُمۡ فِيهَا يَخۡتَصِمُونَ

They will say while contending therein,

26:97

تَٱللَّهِ إِن كُنَّا لَفِى ضَلَـٰلٍۢ مُّبِينٍ

By Allâh, we were truly in a manifest error,

26:98

إِذۡ نُسَوِّيكُم بِرَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِينَ

When We held you (false gods) as equals (in worship) with the Lord of the ‘Âlamîn (mankind, jinn and all that exists);

26:99

وَمَآ أَضَلَّنَآ إِلَّا ٱلۡمُجۡرِمُونَ

And none has brought us into error except the Mujrimûn [Iblîs (Satan) and those of human beings who commit crimes, murderers, polytheists, oppressors].

26:100

فَمَا لَنَا مِن شَـٰفِعِينَ

Now we have no intercessors,

26:101

وَلَا صَدِيقٍ حَمِيمٍۢ

Nor a close friend (to help us).

26:102

فَلَوۡ أَنَّ لَنَا كَرَّةًۭ فَنَكُونَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ

(Alas!) If we only had a chance to return (to the world), we shall truly be among the believers!

26:103

إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَـَٔايَةًۭ ۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكۡثَرُهُم مُّؤۡمِنِينَ

Verily in this is indeed a sign, yet most of them are not believers.

26:104

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلۡعَزِيزُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ

And verily, your Lord, He is truly the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful.

26:105

كَذَّبَتۡ قَوۡمُ نُوحٍ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِينَ

The people of Nûh (Noah) belied the Messengers.

26:106

إِذۡ قَالَ لَهُمۡ أَخُوهُمۡ نُوحٌ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ

When their brother Nûh (Noah) said to them: "Will you not fear Allâh and obey Him?

26:107

إِنِّى لَكُمۡ رَسُولٌ أَمِينٌۭ

"I am a trustworthy Messenger to you.

26:108

فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِيعُونِ

"So fear Allâh, keep your duty to Him, and obey me.

26:109

وَمَآ أَسۡـَٔلُكُمۡ عَلَيۡهِ مِنۡ أَجۡرٍ ۖ إِنۡ أَجۡرِىَ إِلَّا عَلَىٰ رَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِينَ

"No reward do I ask of you for it (my Message of Islâmic Monotheism); my reward is only from the Lord of the ‘Âlamîn (mankind, jinn and all that exists).

26:110

فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِيعُونِ

"So keep your duty to Allâh, fear Him and obey me."

26:111

۞ قَالُوٓا۟ أَنُؤۡمِنُ لَكَ وَٱتَّبَعَكَ ٱلۡأَرۡذَلُونَ

They said: "Shall we believe in you, when the meanest (of the people) follow you?"

26:112

قَالَ وَمَا عِلۡمِى بِمَا كَانُوا۟ يَعۡمَلُونَ

He said: "And what knowledge have I of what they used to do?

26:113

إِنۡ حِسَابُهُمۡ إِلَّا عَلَىٰ رَبِّى ۖ لَوۡ تَشۡعُرُونَ

"Their account is only with my Lord, if you could (but) know.

26:114

وَمَآ أَنَا۠ بِطَارِدِ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ

"And I am not going to drive away the believers.

26:115

إِنۡ أَنَا۠ إِلَّا نَذِيرٌۭ مُّبِينٌۭ

I am only a plain warner."

26:116

قَالُوا۟ لَئِن لَّمۡ تَنتَهِ يَـٰنُوحُ لَتَكُونَنَّ مِنَ ٱلۡمَرۡجُومِينَ

They said: "If you cease not, O Nûh (Noah) you will surely be among those stoned (to death)."

26:117

قَالَ رَبِّ إِنَّ قَوۡمِى كَذَّبُونِ

He said: "My Lord! Verily, my people have belied me.

26:118

فَٱفۡتَحۡ بَيۡنِى وَبَيۡنَهُمۡ فَتۡحًۭا وَنَجِّنِى وَمَن مَّعِىَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ

Therefore judge You between me and them, and save me and those of the believers who are with me."

26:119

فَأَنجَيۡنَـٰهُ وَمَن مَّعَهُۥ فِى ٱلۡفُلۡكِ ٱلۡمَشۡحُونِ

And We saved him and those with him in the laden ship.

26:120

ثُمَّ أَغۡرَقۡنَا بَعۡدُ ٱلۡبَاقِينَ

Then We drowned the rest (disbelievers) thereafter.

26:121

إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَـَٔايَةًۭ ۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكۡثَرُهُم مُّؤۡمِنِينَ

Verily, in this is indeed a sign, yet most of them are not believers.

26:122

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلۡعَزِيزُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ

And verily your Lord, He is indeed the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful.

26:123

كَذَّبَتۡ عَادٌ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِينَ

‘Âd (people) belied the Messengers.

إِذۡ قَالَ لَهُمۡ أَخُوهُمۡ هُودٌ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ

When their brother Hûd said to them: "Will you not fear Allâh and obey Him?

26:125

إِنِّى لَكُمۡ رَسُولٌ أَمِينٌۭ

"Verily I am a trustworthy Messenger to you.

فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِيعُونِ

"So fear Allâh, keep your duty to Him, and obey me.

وَمَآ أَسۡـَٔلُكُمۡ عَلَيۡهِ مِنۡ أَجۡرٍ ۖ إِنۡ أَجۡرِىَ إِلَّا عَلَىٰ رَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِينَ

أَتَبۡنُونَ بِكُلِّ رِيعٍ ءَايَةًۭ تَعۡبَثُونَ

"Do you build high palaces on every high place, while you do not live in them?

26:129

وَتَتَّخِذُونَ مَصَانِعَ لَعَلَّكُمۡ تَخۡلُدُونَ

"And do you get for yourselves palaces (fine buildings) as if you will live therein for ever.[2]

26:130

وَإِذَا بَطَشۡتُم بَطَشۡتُمۡ جَبَّارِينَ

"And when you seize (somebody), seize you (him) as tyrants?

26:131

فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِيعُونِ

"So fear Allâh, keep your duty to Him, and obey me.

وَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱلَّذِىٓ أَمَدَّكُم بِمَا تَعۡلَمُونَ

"And keep your duty to Him, fear Him Who has aided you with all (good things) that you know.

26:133

أَمَدَّكُم بِأَنۡعَـٰمٍۢ وَبَنِينَ

"He has aided you with cattle and children.

وَجَنَّـٰتٍۢ وَعُيُونٍ

"And gardens and springs.

26:135

إِنِّىٓ أَخَافُ عَلَيۡكُمۡ عَذَابَ يَوۡمٍ عَظِيمٍۢ

"Verily, I fear for you the torment of a Great Day."

26:136

قَالُوا۟ سَوَآءٌ عَلَيۡنَآ أَوَعَظۡتَ أَمۡ لَمۡ تَكُن مِّنَ ٱلۡوَٰعِظِينَ

They said: "It is the same to us whether you preach or be not of those who preach.

26:137

إِنۡ هَـٰذَآ إِلَّا خُلُقُ ٱلۡأَوَّلِينَ

"This is no other than the false tales and religion of the ancients, [Tafsir At-Tabarî]

26:138

وَمَا نَحۡنُ بِمُعَذَّبِينَ

"And we are not going to be punished."

فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَأَهۡلَكۡنَـٰهُمۡ ۗ إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَـَٔايَةًۭ ۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكۡثَرُهُم مُّؤۡمِنِينَ

So they belied him, and We destroyed them. Verily in this is indeed a sign, yet most of them are not believers.

26:140

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلۡعَزِيزُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ

26:141

كَذَّبَتۡ ثَمُودُ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِينَ

Thamûd (people) belied the Messengers.

إِذۡ قَالَ لَهُمۡ أَخُوهُمۡ صَـٰلِحٌ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ

When their brother Sâlih said to them: "Will you not fear Allâh and obey Him?

26:143

إِنِّى لَكُمۡ رَسُولٌ أَمِينٌۭ

"I am a trustworthy Messenger to you.

فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِيعُونِ

"So fear Allâh, keep your duty to Him, and obey me.

أَتُتۡرَكُونَ فِى مَا هَـٰهُنَآ ءَامِنِينَ

"Will you be left secure in that which you have here?

فِى جَنَّـٰتٍۢ وَعُيُونٍۢ

"In gardens and springs.

26:148

وَزُرُوعٍۢ وَنَخۡلٍۢ طَلۡعُهَا هَضِيمٌۭ

And green crops (fields) and date-palms with soft spadix.

26:149

وَتَنۡحِتُونَ مِنَ ٱلۡجِبَالِ بُيُوتًۭا فَـٰرِهِينَ

"And you hew out in the mountains, houses with great skill.

26:150

فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِيعُونِ

"So fear Allâh, keep your duty to Him, and obey me.

وَلَا تُطِيعُوٓا۟ أَمۡرَ ٱلۡمُسۡرِفِينَ

"And follow not the command of Al-Musrifûn [i.e. their chiefs: leaders who were polytheists, criminals and sinners],

26:152

ٱلَّذِينَ يُفۡسِدُونَ فِى ٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَلَا يُصۡلِحُونَ

"Who make mischief in the land, and reform not."

26:153

قَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّمَآ أَنتَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُسَحَّرِينَ

They said: "You are only of those bewitched!

26:154

مَآ أَنتَ إِلَّا بَشَرٌۭ مِّثۡلُنَا فَأۡتِ بِـَٔايَةٍ إِن كُنتَ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰدِقِينَ

"You are but a human being like us. Then bring us a sign if you are of the truthful."

26:155

قَالَ هَـٰذِهِۦ نَاقَةٌۭ لَّهَا شِرۡبٌۭ وَلَكُمۡ شِرۡبُ يَوۡمٍۢ مَّعۡلُومٍۢ

He said: "Here is a she-camel: it has a right to drink (water), and you have a right to drink (water) (each) on a day, known.

26:156

وَلَا تَمَسُّوهَا بِسُوٓءٍۢ فَيَأۡخُذَكُمۡ عَذَابُ يَوۡمٍ عَظِيمٍۢ

"And touch her not with harm, lest the torment of a Great Day should seize you."

26:157

فَعَقَرُوهَا فَأَصۡبَحُوا۟ نَـٰدِمِينَ

But they killed her, and then they became regretful.

26:158

فَأَخَذَهُمُ ٱلۡعَذَابُ ۗ إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَـَٔايَةًۭ ۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكۡثَرُهُم مُّؤۡمِنِينَ

So the torment overtook them. Verily, in this is indeed a sign, yet most of them are not believers.

26:159

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلۡعَزِيزُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ

And verily your Lord, He is indeed the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful.

كَذَّبَتۡ قَوۡمُ لُوطٍ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِينَ

The people of Lût (Lot) (-who dwelt in the town of Sodom in Palestine) belied the Messengers.

إِذۡ قَالَ لَهُمۡ أَخُوهُمۡ لُوطٌ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ

When their brother Lût (Lot) said to them: "Will you not fear Allâh and obey Him?

إِنِّى لَكُمۡ رَسُولٌ أَمِينٌۭ

"Go you in unto the males of the ‘Âlamîn (mankind),

26:166

وَتَذَرُونَ مَا خَلَقَ لَكُمۡ رَبُّكُم مِّنۡ أَزۡوَٰجِكُم ۚ بَلۡ أَنتُمۡ قَوۡمٌ عَادُونَ

"And leave those whom Allâh has created for you to be your wives? Nay, you are a trespassing people!"

26:167

قَالُوا۟ لَئِن لَّمۡ تَنتَهِ يَـٰلُوطُ لَتَكُونَنَّ مِنَ ٱلۡمُخۡرَجِينَ

They said: "If you cease not O Lût (Lot)! verily, you will be one of those who are driven out!"

26:168

قَالَ إِنِّى لِعَمَلِكُم مِّنَ ٱلۡقَالِينَ

He said: "I am, indeed, of those who disapprove with severe anger and fury your (this evil) action (of sodomy).

26:169

رَبِّ نَجِّنِى وَأَهۡلِى مِمَّا يَعۡمَلُونَ

"My Lord! Save me and my family from what they do."

26:170

فَنَجَّيۡنَـٰهُ وَأَهۡلَهُۥٓ أَجۡمَعِينَ

So We saved him and his family, all,

26:171

إِلَّا عَجُوزًۭا فِى ٱلۡغَـٰبِرِينَ

Except an old woman (his wife) among those who remained behind.

26:172

ثُمَّ دَمَّرۡنَا ٱلۡـَٔاخَرِينَ

Then afterward We destroyed the others.

26:173

وَأَمۡطَرۡنَا عَلَيۡهِم مَّطَرًۭا ۖ فَسَآءَ مَطَرُ ٱلۡمُنذَرِينَ

And We rained on them a rain (of torment). And how evil was the rain of those who had been warned!

26:174

إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَـَٔايَةًۭ ۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكۡثَرُهُم مُّؤۡمِنِينَ

Verily, in this is indeed a sign, yet most of them are not believers.

26:175

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلۡعَزِيزُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ

And verily your Lord, He is indeed the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful.

26:176

كَذَّبَ أَصۡحَـٰبُ لۡـَٔيۡكَةِ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِينَ

The dwellers of Al-Aikah [near Madyan (Midian)] belied the Messengers.

26:177

إِذۡ قَالَ لَهُمۡ شُعَيۡبٌ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ

When Shu‘aib said to them: "Will you not fear Allâh (and obey Him)?

26:178

إِنِّى لَكُمۡ رَسُولٌ أَمِينٌۭ

"I am a trustworthy Messenger to you.

26:179

فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِيعُونِ

"So fear Allâh, keep your duty to Him, and obey me.

26:180

وَمَآ أَسۡـَٔلُكُمۡ عَلَيۡهِ مِنۡ أَجۡرٍ ۖ إِنۡ أَجۡرِىَ إِلَّا عَلَىٰ رَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِينَ

"No reward do I ask of you for it (my Message of Islâmic Monotheism); my reward is only from the Lord of the ‘Âlamîn (mankind, jinn and all that exists).

26:181

۞ أَوۡفُوا۟ ٱلۡكَيۡلَ وَلَا تَكُونُوا۟ مِنَ ٱلۡمُخۡسِرِينَ

"Give full measure, and cause no loss (to others).

26:182

وَزِنُوا۟ بِٱلۡقِسۡطَاسِ ٱلۡمُسۡتَقِيمِ

"And weigh with the true and straight balance.

26:183

وَلَا تَبۡخَسُوا۟ ٱلنَّاسَ أَشۡيَآءَهُمۡ وَلَا تَعۡثَوۡا۟ فِى ٱلۡأَرۡضِ مُفۡسِدِينَ

"And defraud not people by reducing their things, nor do evil, making corruption and mischief in the land.

26:184

وَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَكُمۡ وَٱلۡجِبِلَّةَ ٱلۡأَوَّلِينَ

"And fear Him Who created you and the generations of the men of old."

26:185

قَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّمَآ أَنتَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُسَحَّرِينَ

They said: "You are only one of those bewitched!

26:186

وَمَآ أَنتَ إِلَّا بَشَرٌۭ مِّثۡلُنَا وَإِن نَّظُنُّكَ لَمِنَ ٱلۡكَـٰذِبِينَ

"You are but a human being like us and verily, we think that you are one of the liars!

26:187

فَأَسۡقِطۡ عَلَيۡنَا كِسَفًۭا مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ إِن كُنتَ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰدِقِينَ

"So cause a piece of the heaven to fall on us, if you are of the truthful!"

26:188

قَالَ رَبِّىٓ أَعۡلَمُ بِمَا تَعۡمَلُونَ

He said: "My Lord is the Best Knower of what you do."

26:189

فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَأَخَذَهُمۡ عَذَابُ يَوۡمِ ٱلظُّلَّةِ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ عَذَابَ يَوۡمٍ عَظِيمٍ

But they belied him, so the torment of the day of shadow (a gloomy cloud) seized them. Indeed that was the torment of a Great Day.

26:190

إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَـَٔايَةًۭ ۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكۡثَرُهُم مُّؤۡمِنِينَ

26:191

26:192

26:193

نَزَلَ بِهِ ٱلرُّوحُ ٱلۡأَمِينُ

Which the trustworthy Rûh [Jibrîl (Gabriel)] has brought down

26:194

عَلَىٰ قَلۡبِكَ لِتَكُونَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُنذِرِينَ

Upon your heart (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) that you may be (one) of the warners,

26:195

بِلِسَانٍ عَرَبِىٍّۢ مُّبِينٍۢ

In the plain Arabic language.

26:196

وَإِنَّهُۥ لَفِى زُبُرِ ٱلۡأَوَّلِينَ

And verily, it (the Qur’ân, and its revelation to Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) is (announced) in the Scriptures [i.e. the Taurât (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel)] of former people.

26:197

أَوَلَمۡ يَكُن لَّهُمۡ ءَايَةً أَن يَعۡلَمَهُۥ عُلَمَـٰٓؤُا۟ بَنِىٓ إِسۡرَٰٓءِيلَ

Is it not a sign to them that the learned scholars (like ‘Abdullâh bin Salâm رضي الله عنه who embraced Islâm)[3] of the Children of Israel knew it (as true)?

26:198

وَلَوۡ نَزَّلۡنَـٰهُ عَلَىٰ بَعۡضِ ٱلۡأَعۡجَمِينَ

And if We had revealed it (this Qur’ân) unto any of the non-Arabs,

26:199

فَقَرَأَهُۥ عَلَيۡهِم مَّا كَانُوا۟ بِهِۦ مُؤۡمِنِينَ

And he had recited it unto them, they would not have believed in it.

26:200

كَذَٰلِكَ سَلَكۡنَـٰهُ فِى قُلُوبِ ٱلۡمُجۡرِمِينَ

Thus have We caused it (the denial of the Qur’ân) to enter the hearts of the Mûjrimûn (criminals, polytheists, sinners).

26:201

لَا يُؤۡمِنُونَ بِهِۦ حَتَّىٰ يَرَوُا۟ ٱلۡعَذَابَ ٱلۡأَلِيمَ

They will not believe in it until they see the painful torment.

26:202

فَيَأۡتِيَهُم بَغۡتَةًۭ وَهُمۡ لَا يَشۡعُرُونَ

It shall come to them of a sudden, while they perceive it not.

26:203

فَيَقُولُوا۟ هَلۡ نَحۡنُ مُنظَرُونَ

Then they will say: "Can we be respited?"

26:204

أَفَبِعَذَابِنَا يَسۡتَعۡجِلُونَ

Would they then wish for Our Torment to be hastened on?

26:205

أَفَرَءَيۡتَ إِن مَّتَّعۡنَـٰهُمۡ سِنِينَ

Tell Me, (even) if We do let them enjoy for years,

26:206

ثُمَّ جَآءَهُم مَّا كَانُوا۟ يُوعَدُونَ

And afterwards comes to them that (punishment) which they had been promised,

26:207

مَآ أَغۡنَىٰ عَنۡهُم مَّا كَانُوا۟ يُمَتَّعُونَ

All that with which they used to enjoy shall not avail them.

26:208

وَمَآ أَهۡلَكۡنَا مِن قَرۡيَةٍ إِلَّا لَهَا مُنذِرُونَ

And never did We destroy a township but it had its warners

26:209

ذِكۡرَىٰ وَمَا كُنَّا ظَـٰلِمِينَ

By way of reminder, and We have never been unjust.

26:210

وَمَا تَنَزَّلَتۡ بِهِ ٱلشَّيَـٰطِينُ

And it is not the Shayâtîn (devils) who have brought it (this Qur’ân) down.

26:211

وَمَا يَنۢبَغِى لَهُمۡ وَمَا يَسۡتَطِيعُونَ

Neither would it suit them, nor they can (produce it).

26:212

إِنَّهُمۡ عَنِ ٱلسَّمۡعِ لَمَعۡزُولُونَ

Verily, they have been removed far from hearing it.

26:213

فَلَا تَدۡعُ مَعَ ٱللَّهِ إِلَـٰهًا ءَاخَرَ فَتَكُونَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُعَذَّبِينَ

So invoke not with Allâh another ilâh (god) lest you should be among those who receive punishment.

26:214

وَأَنذِرۡ عَشِيرَتَكَ ٱلۡأَقۡرَبِينَ

And warn your tribe (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) of near kindred.[4]

26:215

وَٱخۡفِضۡ جَنَاحَكَ لِمَنِ ٱتَّبَعَكَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ

And be kind and humble to the believers who follow you.

26:216

فَإِنۡ عَصَوۡكَ فَقُلۡ إِنِّى بَرِىٓءٌۭ مِّمَّا تَعۡمَلُونَ

Then if they disobey you, say: "I am innocent of what you do."

26:217

وَتَوَكَّلۡ عَلَى ٱلۡعَزِيزِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

And put your trust in the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful,

26:218

ٱلَّذِى يَرَىٰكَ حِينَ تَقُومُ

Who sees you (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) when you stand up (alone at night for Tahajjud prayers).

26:219

وَتَقَلُّبَكَ فِى ٱلسَّـٰجِدِينَ

And your movements among those who fall prostrate (to Allâh in the five compulsory congregational prayers).

26:220

إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ ٱلسَّمِيعُ ٱلۡعَلِيمُ

Verily He, only He, is the All-Hearer, the All-Knower.

26:221

هَلۡ أُنَبِّئُكُمۡ عَلَىٰ مَن تَنَزَّلُ ٱلشَّيَـٰطِينُ

Shall I inform you (O people!) upon whom the Shayâtîn (devils) descend?

26:222

تَنَزَّلُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ أَفَّاكٍ أَثِيمٍۢ

They descend on every lying, sinful person.

26:223

يُلۡقُونَ ٱلسَّمۡعَ وَأَكۡثَرُهُمۡ كَـٰذِبُونَ

Who gives ear (to the devils and they pour what they may have heard of the Unseen from the angels), and most of them are liars.

26:224

وَٱلشُّعَرَآءُ يَتَّبِعُهُمُ ٱلۡغَاوُۥنَ

As for the poets, the erring ones follow them,

26:225

أَلَمۡ تَرَ أَنَّهُمۡ فِى كُلِّ وَادٍۢ يَهِيمُونَ

See you not that they speak about every subject (praising people - right or wrong) in their poetry?

26:226

وَأَنَّهُمۡ يَقُولُونَ مَا لَا يَفۡعَلُونَ

And that they say what they do not do.

26:227

إِلَّا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ وَذَكَرُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ كَثِيرًۭا وَٱنتَصَرُوا۟ مِنۢ بَعۡدِ مَا ظُلِمُوا۟ ۗ وَسَيَعۡلَمُ ٱلَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوٓا۟ أَىَّ مُنقَلَبٍۢ يَنقَلِبُونَ

Except those who believe (in the Oneness of Allâh - Islâmic Monotheism) and do righteous deeds, and remember Allâh much, and vindicate themselves after they have been wronged [by replying back in poetry to the unjust poetry (which the pagan poets utter against the Muslims)]. And those who do wrong will come to know by what overturning they will be overturned.
